Boudica and the Romans gallery

Learn about Boudica, great warrior Queen of the Iceni, and her revolt against the Romans.

A metal Roman cup with a small handle on each side. There is a small metalwork bird on top of each handle.

Boudica was the Queen of the Iceni - a Celtic tribe during the late Iron Age. The Iceni lived in the area now covered by Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire.

In this gallery you can learn more about Boudica and her revolt against the Romans in AD60-61. You can see re-created scenes, handle objects, and take coin rubbings. You can also ride on a reproduction wood chariot like the one Boudica used as she led her people into battle.

There's a wealth of objects from the period on display for you to discover. Highlights include:

  • The Snettisham treasure - the largest collection of Iron Age gold and silver neck rings found anywhere in Europe
  • The Worthing helmet - a very rare Roman calvalry parade helmet made from bronze and decorated with an eagle and dragons

The Boudica and the Romans gallery is on the ground floor.
