Decorative arts gallery

Decorative arts are the 'arts of living'. They're the objects we choose to have in our homes that are both beautiful and functional.

A while and blue Lowestoft Porcelain teapot

Until the late 18th century, Norwich was the second most important city in England. The city played an important role in the development of the decorative arts and their manufacture. Many products of national and international significance were made here - especially textiles and silver.

The decorative arts galleries are on the ground floor.

Arts of Living Gallery

This gallery shows how the decorative arts reflect style through the ages, from 1400 to the present day. Objects on display include metalwork, pottery, and textiles.

Historical, technical, aesthetic, political, and personal factors can all affect an object's appearance. Objects in the Arts of Living Gallery show the impact these factors have had on design through the ages.

Wider World Gallery

A display of decorative arts from across the world, mainly dating from the 18th to 20th century.

Twining Teapot Gallery

Norwich Castle has the largest collection of British ceramic teapots in the world. The Twining Teapot Gallery displays a beautiful selection of these. They date from the early 18th century to the present.
