Essential information
Maximum 30 pupils, 10am until 2pm, £200 fee, pupils must have studied Latin for at least a year
The event
This event includes four sessions led by museum staff:
- Meet a Roman soldier and learn the Latin words for his armour, weapons, tactics, orders and commands.
- With a Roman citizen, handle real and replica objects and learn the Latin words for them.
- Use Latin adjectives to describe Roman objects while exploring the Romans gallery.
- Learn and perform (in Latin) a play of The Three Little Pigs.
Aims and learning outcomes
- Understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources.
- Speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what students want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation.
National Curriculum links
- '...provide an appropriate balance of spoken and written language and...lay the foundations for further foreign language teaching... It should enable pupils to understand and communicate ideas...using their knowledge of phonology, grammatical structures and vocabulary.'
- For ancient languages: '...provide a linguistic foundation for reading comprehension and an appreciation of classical civilisation. Pupils...may take part in simple oral exchanges, while discussion of what they read will be conducted in English. A linguistic foundation in ancient languages may support the study of modern languages....'
