KS3 Storming the Castle: A Maths and History Investigation

Essential information

Maximum group size 120, £6 per pupil, minimum fee £240, 10am until 2pm.

Please note: This event will not visit the Castle Keep while the Royal Palace Reborn project is ongoing.

The event

Use maths to investigate a real historical event—the siege of Norwich Castle in 1216. Meet characters from 1216 and use maths to explore the outcome of the siege. Investigate the water supply, handle and assess medieval objects, and play strategic games. Plus handle, measure and assess weapons used to attack and defend a castle, plan and calculate a budget for the siege, and measure the Castle Keep to calculate its scale.

Learning outcomes

Mathematics

• Reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, develop an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language
• Solve problems by applying maths to routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication. Break down problems into simpler steps and persevere in seeking solutions

History

• Know and understand how King John shaped the country and how it has been influenced by the French
• Understand methods of historical enquiry. Discern how and why contrasting arguments and interpretations of the past have been constructed by supporters and enemies of King John
• Understand the connections between Norwich, East Anglian, British and European history
